Marco Mazzoni’s and His Wondrous Sketchbook Creatures

It's kind of a pisser when I see Marco Mazzoni's sketchbook art. The work he does in what would seem a relatively disposable media, I couldn't pull off on the finest piece of cotton rag or canvas. Exceptional stuff here. … [Read more...]

Why Don’t My Sketchbooks Turn Out Like This?

Lei Melendres

While cruising around Doodler's Anonymous, it becomes painfully clear that my sketchbook time is seriously lacking compared to some artists. I always keep some sort of notebook handy, but its usually reserved for notes and less often, sketches. When the pen does hit the paper in a creative fashion, it never, ever turns out as cool as any of these fine artists below. Perhaps I just need more seat-time with a Rapidograph and Moleskine. Because I'm so motivated by what I'm doing, it's invigorated my need to ingest information. The beauty of these books is two fold for Fresh Rag, because most books I read are actual paper, and I get to share some great reading material to y'all. Last month I talked about a quick and easy read, Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon. It really was a simple read, and if I dedicated myself to it, could have put it away in a day or less. Despite its size, there's some really great motivational content there for artists, and its one of those books you end up reading several times because the information is timeless. Once that book was finished, I picked up Scott Belsky's latest opus, Making Ideas Happen. Don't let the name fool you, this book is not about how to generate ideas. Making Ideas Happen is about taking your ideas from … [Read more...]
