The Most Important Thing I’ve Learned About Business

Clarity is an amazing thing; that aha moment when you finally stumble across an idea that brings order to a part of your world. I had a moment like that this week and it is changing the way I think about business. The thing I "discovered" has actually been here all along. I've known about this aspect of myself for a very long time, I just never knew it would become the crux of my world, or perhaps I never allowed it to manifest. What I learned, no, what I believe is connections are the most important aspect to any business relationship. I don't care how good you are at what you do; if you do not connect with people and ideas on an authentic level, you do yourself and your business a disservice. From A to Z and Back Again Some time ago, I took a brain evaluation quiz online. The simple test asked a series of questions and then showed you what segment of the brain you do most of the thinking from. I don't recall all the designations or what each one meant, but mine came up dead … [Read more...]

Your WordPress Site Has Been Hacked!

Maybe you've seen this thread around this past week about WordPress sites being under what they call a "Brute Force" attack. If you haven't, allow me to give you the rundown. This is the note I got from my hosting company about the problem: Since yesterday morning, Our internal monitoring systems reported that WordPress users were subject to an unusually high number of attacks. Brute force attacks occur through exploited accounts at other hosting companies. The attacks are attempts to find users that have weak passwords and outdated installations. Once the attacker has found a WordPress account with a weak password, it’s used to gain access to the administration panel. Outdated versions of WordPress scripts are exploited and used to attack other hosting companies. We have implemented additional security tools and is carefully monitoring traffic. However, the best form of protection against these attacks begins at the customer level. Some douchebags have decided they want access to … [Read more...]

The Best Way to Design an Ebook

landscape layout - the best spinner

After launching my ebook last week, I got a myriad of questions about it, but one in particular requires some deeper insight, so I figured I'd share here. Jacquelyn Tierney asks, "Since you are an art director, I am really interested in your opinions on what makes a killer e-book visually. can you write a blog post on that?" The quick and dirty answer: It depends. Not to be completely obtuse, there really is no one right way to design or configure an ebook. In the past, PDF ebooks usually came in a very linear, traditional page layout form; single-column text streaming on page after page until the end. Very often, they wer utilitarian at best. Since the advent of the tablet computer, one that you can alternate the way you view content on the fly, the way people design and format ebooks has changed dramatically. Most are still formatted in a traditional portrait oriented layout, but more and more, designers are using landscape orientation to create more space and design … [Read more...]

Building a Connection to Your Customers

Up until recently, I had never bought an original art piece from anyone. I have tons of art, but it's mostly photographs and art prints. My budget just didn't include original paintings, but I told myself I would start my collection this year, and I did, starting with a piece by Aaron Kraten. I know probably hundreds of artists, so why did I choose to buy from Aaron? For one, I love his work. Not every piece speaks to me, but many do, and this one jumped out at me. That's not the only reason I bought from Aaron though. I've only met Aaron in person once, and he probably wouldn't remember it, but more than a decade ago, he occupied a space in a popular shopping "anti-mall" called The Lab. It was a large space filled to the brim with Aaron's art work and overabundant enthusiasm. He was fun and energetic and very friendly—I wish I could have bought something from him then, but in retrospect, I'm glad I waited because his work has grown so much since then. I connected with Aaron … [Read more...]

You Are Powerful Beyond Measure

I happened to catch the end of Coach Carter this weekend, and at the end, there is a very powerful quote. The quote is from author and spiritual activist, Marianne Williamson. I've broken it down in cadence because there are so many great lines in this one quote, they all deserve some space of their own. "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.' We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone and as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the … [Read more...]
