Selling Art Online Isn’t Easy, But Maybe This Will Help

I had one main goal for February, 2013, and that was to get my first ebook published by March. Today I am proud to announce that I finally hit the publish button. Selling Art Online - 21 Places to Showcase Your Art and Start Getting Paid is currently available for download... with a small catch. If I had to put a value on it, with all the time and energy that went into researching and writing this book, I could easily charge $30. I absolutely intend to sell this book for what it is worth, but for those of you who are special enough to see this post, and only for a limited time, I'm giving the book away free to newsletter subscribers (other shoe, firmly dropped). Yes, this glorious ebook can be had for the simple effort of entering your name and email address and clicking a couple of follow up links. On top getting this quality piece of content free, you'll be getting all the core content that only newsletter subscribers are privilege to receive. There is very little overlap … [Read more...]

Do It Your Damn Self

chalkboard - drawing with the mouse is hard

A friend of mine made an off-the-cuff comment to me yesterday about my post, something to the degree of, "you're using someone else's photo again". My friend didn't mean anything by it except as a general statement, but the idea hit me in an interesting way. I am an artist and graphic designer—Why the heck aren't I making my own art for every single post. Even if my art sucks in comparison to the photo I might showcase, unless I'm specifically featuring the work of another artists, there really is no reason why I shouldn't be doing my own thing. On a related note, I'll occasionally be posting tips on how I create some of the art pieces I do, both for the blog and real life. I also want to share some graphic design tips for people that have no interest in graphic design. I know, I'm really targeting a burgeoning market there, but I figure some of them might actually want to know something new about how to lay out a business card or create some nice typography. Finally, … [Read more...]

Is It Tomorrow Yet?

Tomorrow Rewards 2

By now, some of you are familiar with my latest diversion, some new collage experimentation. I still haven't decided if, how or when I will put these new pieces up for grabs, but I'm closer to making those decision. This weekend, I experimented again, trying out a concept I stole from an old VANS print ad from years ago. I've been wanting to use it for some time in my design work, but never had the right opportunity. This seemed like a good time to experiment. The hardest part about collage is the time between layers. The acrylic medium doesn't dry instantaneously, which is good because I have flexibility in moving pieces around, but can make for a long process. I really need to work on multiple concepts at once in order to really keep moving along. You would think I would have learned my lesson using KRINK, an purposely runny ink that's great for getting some nice drip effects, but leaves hands, tools and everything else a bit messy. Put this concept in the … [Read more...]

One Down. Many More to Go

Consider this turkey done. I simmered on it overnight and I'm stoked on it, so it is finished. I'll snap a better photo as soon as I mount it. Not sure if I'm going to sell it, but here's the deets: Burden to Bear Mixed media on board 6"x6" … [Read more...]

Gathering the Goods

goods-3

Over the past week I've been very conceptual in my head about the kind of collage work that I want to be doing. The problem is that it's all still in my head and no place else, so it's time to fix that. I know one thing I want to do is uses as much "found art" and recycled goods as I can, but this requires collecting, which I haven't done. Today I actively collected my first piece. Eri Sugimoto is a sculpture and pottery artist based here in Los Angeles. Every time I see her work at shows, I want to buy some, but I'm a bit scared. Although her work is completely functional, it's so beautiful, I dare not use it. These sausage fingers would most certainly fumble the delicate pottery and have it end up in a million pieces on the floor. Either that, or my little boy will want to use it as a play toy, I'm sure of it. Sugimoto's business card, however; I'm all over that! This card is the first in what I hope will end up being a large collection of scraps to go into different … [Read more...]
