A Wolf in the Hen House

Marie Forleo

Very soon, I'm going to be making a substantial public announcement about my personal future and what it holds for me, but before I go into that, I need to tell you about something I've been involved in for the last few weeks and will be doing for the next couple months. It's called B-School and if you know anything about it, you know that I am definitely NOT the target market, or so you would think. B-School is the brainchild of online business maven, Marie Forleo, a firecracker of a woman who is dynamic, funny and smart like nobody's business. Marie is a brilliant lady who I connected with the first time I saw one of her many videos on her site. B-School (business school)l is Marie's training course for teaching women how to become better, more profitable and abundant with their online business. Yes, you read that right, teaching women is Marie's focus. So what the hell am I thinking by enrolling in the course? First, I was reassured by Marie and her team that "plenty" of … [Read more...]

Etsy Party at Crafted

crafted-etsyparty-1

Recently, Etsy threw a nationwide Craft Party with the local event being held at CRAFTED. I was graciously invited by CRAFTED as a VIP to get some insight about the first 2 months since they opened, and I got some insider info about the future. Nothing is set in stone for them about this tidbit, but it's possible they may be rearranging their space plans. What was originally going to be Phase 2 is potentially a large, open event space that could accomodate everything from private parties and pop-up shops to hosting whole art and craft events. The details are still being nailed down, but I got look at the space and it's definitely large enough to house events like Unique & Renegade. These are soft plans, though. I've asked for firmer details as soon as they get them nailed down. The Etsy party was a hit, with thousands of people pouring through the doors in the evening hours. While talking with a few of the vendors, Fridays tend to be a bit slower, so this much activity was a … [Read more...]

Ain’t No Party Like a West Coast Etsy Party…

crafted etsy party

Tonight, Crafted at the Port of LA is hosting their first Etsy Party, starting at 7pm for the general public. I will be attending as your roving reporter in the field, snapping photos, talking with important artists and people, and getting all the lowdown on the progression of Crafted as they near the opening of Phase 2 sometime in September. In a nutshell, Craft Party is a celebration of meeting and making, of creativity and community. It’s a time to meet your neighbors and share a creative skill. It’s a time to have fun and party down with scissors in your hand (carefully, that is). I'll have lots more details of the event and the Crafted updates, but if you're going to be in the San Pedro/Long Beach area on Friday evening, why not swing on by and have some fun. Make sure to RSVP on the Meetup.com page because I think some of the special happenings are limited. … [Read more...]

Renegade Los Angeles – These Are My People

Renegade1

This past weekend was a scorcher in the LA Basin; what better time to take a stroll through a park and look at hundreds of local and travelling artisans in a group setting? This is my 2nd time attending the Renegade show, both times during the summer, and although it wasn't nearly as busy as I expected it to be, I felt more at home at this show than most others. If you compare Renegade to the other LA shows (Unique, Abbot Kinney, Patchwork), a couple things become abundantly clear: There are a whole lot of jewelry designers in the greater Los Angeles area This is the show for print artists. You can find just about any design you can think of when it comes to jewelry at this show, and you definitely can find a whole lot more art prints than all of the other shows combined. I met so many new poster artists, it's going to be awhile before I finish showcasing them all here. That's good news for you, and hopefully they feel the same. Here's a few shots of the event and some … [Read more...]

Card Collecting from Renegade

Cards collected from Renegade Los Angeles

This past weekend, my wife and I took a trip into the big city to have a go at Renegade LA. We had a great time and I met a lot of neat, new folks, some of which I'll be sharing with you here in the very near future. I also have a bunch of photos I took, but I've been too busy and too procrastinaty to put them together in a post for y'all. As much as I love my new camera, I really wish it would just do all the photo editing work for me. A large majority of the people I spoke with at the show were very warm and open to talk to me about their business, some way more than others, but for the most part, a very sociable crowd. That said, there were a reasonable amount of vendors who are not very sociable, and to some degree, not friendly. I'm not going to call anyone out here specifically, but some artists could hardly be bothered to talk to me because they were too busy working on their next piece. I realize that us right-brainers can sometimes be a bit of the wallflower type; … [Read more...]
