Ephemera est Absentis

magazines on display — not always the best content for art

The hardest part about beginning collage work is collecting all the elements that you need to make a solid piece. Sure, you could probably get away with creating 1 or 2 pieces with just the few things you have at arms reach, but the inspiration quickly dies when you don't have the kinds of items handy that you want/need to create something from your head. This is where I'm at; a bunch of ideas floating around my noggin and not enough elements at hand to put them onto board. Working for a company that produces magazines, you'd think I'd have tons of material to choose from, but since 70% of what we do are car, truck and motorcycle related, there's only so much I can snatch from within the pages of these books before it gets repetitive. Also, I find myself defaulting to magazines because they are so readily available and I'm walking around with blinders to other options. I need to keep my head facing the ground for the discarded tidbits that others have left behind. Easier said … [Read more...]

Kim Turner Destroys Intellectual Property For Your Pleasure

I love that Kim Turner tells you flat out that she gets a lot of her collage imagery from the catalogs of famous retail outlets. It's almost a blatant Eff You to the companies that they can't keep producing marginal quality stuff for the lowest common denominator and get away with it. Kim will take your catalog, cut it up and make art where complete lack of art used to be. How ironic would if Anthopologie called her up soon and said they'd like to sell her work in their shops? Anyway, enjoy Kim Turner's art. … [Read more...]

Don’t Tell Roni, but I’m Showing You Her Work Without Asking

Don't look now, but we have a spy amongst us. This spy is a crafty one, literally, comes on here, says nice things, tells us how inspiring we are, but don't be fooled; she's a sandbagger. Some time ago, a woman with many aliases (OchreMesa, BadJonesRising, Roni J.), hit me up on Twitter, made a very strong impression upon me from the start. She plays coy, acts very humble and gracious to lure you in, then when you least expect it, she hits you in the face with her massive talent. So there I was, barely conscious on the floor, recovering from the artistic Mack truck that ran me over. I gathered my wits and dug deeper, only to find layers upon layers of artistic skills. This woman is no amateur folks; she's a full-fledged professional, ready to take out on any attackers. Allow me to show you what we're dealing with here. … [Read more...]

Maureen Brouilette Inspires the Hell out of Me

Cadillac Ranch

One of my favorite artists on Etsy is the ever present and popular, Mae Chevrette. I dig her style and sea-fairing subject matter; reminds me of my own work, only better than mine by a country mile. So, when Mae says she's inspired by another artist, I take notice. This time it's Maureen Brouilette, and one look at her work shows me exactly why she's so inspired. I'm in awe. I see these pieces and I get anxious, only because I want to be doing this kind of work, and I've completely lost touch with that side of things for a myriad of self-established reasons, but we're not hear to talk about my psychosis. We're hear to admire great work. Go on then. … [Read more...]
